Meet the Team Ben Hanson, Multi-Utility Estimator

We caught up with Ben Hanson, from our Multi-Utility estimating team, to find out more about his job what recently brought him back to Fulcrum.

Tell us about your role…

As an estimator I work closely with our sales team. I take the initial scope of works they’ve developed with our customers and begin to add the engineering specifications that will enable the job to be accurately costed and priced.

As you will find across all the teams at Fulcrum, there is an exceptionally close working relationship between the sales and estimating team, as we pool our expertise and experience to ensure we can design, deliver and price the project in the best way possible for the customer.

When the customer places the order for the works, the job is transferred to our design team to work up the detailed specifications for the project.  For complex projects, I’ll provide a handover to the design team to share my detailed knowledge of the scheme.

Also, for larger projects that are delivered over a long period of time, there are sometimes alterations, which would mean we revisit the estimate and the scheme if there are any design or cost changes. I’ll work hand in hand with the design team, operations team, or sales team where this is needed.

How long have you worked in the industry?

I’ve worked in the utilities industry for more than 20 years. I started at Fulcrum back in 2002 in a design role and developed my experience and qualifications over the next two decades.

I’ve been supported with my professional development, gaining several professional and industry qualifications that enabled me to progress my career to take on Team Leader roles, including managing a sales team.

I then made the move into estimating where I stayed for about seven years before taking the decision to get a broader view of the industry by moving to a different company at the end of 2022.

I did this as I wanted to get a flavour of the industry from a different perspective, but I always knew I’d come back home to Fulcrum at some point.

So, why did you return?

I’ve always loved working here and there has always been a great working atmosphere at Fulcrum, that I really enjoy being part of. The people here at Fulcrum are its best assets, and its great to be working with so many familiar, talented and respected faces.

Plus, I’ve been impressed with the progress the business has made in the past year, particularly with the growth and range of multi-utility projects the business now delivers.

This is really evident in the multi-utility estimates I produce across a range of housing, high rise and industrial & commercial projects.
